Press release

The City of Montréal pledges $100 million dollars to help transition Little Burgundy’s original homeowners into the newly built development.

The City of Montréal promises to help the current residents of Little Burgundy find temporary housing, then transition them to the new development once it has been built.

Montréal, QC- November 1st, 1968

The City of Montréal has made the executive decision to tear down the district of Little Burgundy to rebuild a new housing development in place of the older run-down housing. In order to see this through, the City of Montréal has decided to put $100 million towards helping the current residents move into temporary housing and then back into the new development. This plan will consist of assisting the residents in finding a temporary living space that is fit for their family dynamic. Over the next six months, while this new development will be under construction, the City of Montréal will be providing a $1000 monthly allowance to go towards the residents’ living expenses. Once completed, the city will assist all residents that choose to move back to the newly developed housing. Those who choose to opt-out may do so, as there is no pressure.

We understand that this will be a very difficult transition, but we have many different support systems available to help make this go over as efficiently as possible. We understand that the main concern is the demolition itself. We did not make this decision lightly. It was discussed with professionals and experts, and what came from this decision was that in the citizens’ best interest and safety, this must be done. Mayor John Doe says, “this is what the government of Quebec deeply desires [in] encouraging the realization of projects like this one”. We are excited about the future and what positives this project will bring forth.

The City of Montréal is filled with many diverse communities, filled with many different cultures and stories. This city has a population of 1.78 million people and is the largest city in the province of Quebec. We love to welcome newcomers to our beautiful city, come visit us!
